The Simple Answer

Nearly 1/3 of all the students at Downing are in band. It is the largest organization on campus, and will continue to grow and become even stronger.

More Specifically

Over the years we are proud to say that we have had several students plan to be musicians, music educators and music majors. While we are proud of this, we realize that the majority of students will continue their college education in other areas. Students in the band at Downing have expressed plans to become:
Doctors
Veterinarians
Athletes
Lawyers
Airline Pilots
Financial Advisors
Horse Trainers
Photographers
Marine Biologists
Military Officers

To name just a few....

The self-discipline and life skills that students learn in band will help our students reach their goals. Colleges are always impressed when they see students who have been a part of their middle and high school band programs. In particular, schools are starting to take special notice of students who are involved in band for all 7 years (middle school through high school).
Do Band Students do other activities outside of band?

Students in the band at Downing have also been involved in:

Downing Athletics (All Sports)
Choir
Orchestra
Church Activities
Student Council
Dance
Outside School Sports	Horseback Riding
Fellowship of Christian Athletes
National Junior Honor Society
Rock Bands
Gymnastics
Rodeo
Piano Lessons & Competitions

Since the middle school years offer new possibilities, we encourage students to be involved in other activities. We always work together to help them succeed in band, academics, and their other endeavors.

Is it a good idea to be in band and other activities?

Students who are involved in more than one activity have proven to be more well-rounded students. Through their activities they learn several key life skills, including:

Organization
Better Communication
Balance
Proactive Planning
Importance of Academic Success
Prioritization
Accountability
Independence
Ability to work well with others

Along with many other skills...

While we do encourage students to explore their interests, a certain level of commitment is required in order to learn to play an instrument. During the first year, band will require daily practice to achieve classroom expectations and grades. Commitment is a key characteristic of all Downing Band Students.
