There are a few simple steps that must be followed to join band at Downing:

Step 1: Choose Band on your Downing Course Selection Card

These cards will be distributed to the Fifth grade students during their visit to Downing on Monday, March 10th, and will be due back to their elementary schools that week.

Students wishing to join band should make band one of their top two (2) elective choices.

Step 2: Set-up an Instrument Selection Appointment

The sign-ups for these appointments will be through this website. You may check on the main 5th Grade Page after Spring Break to sign-up for appointment times.

Step 3: Instrument Selection Appointment

You can try out the instruments. A Downing Band Director will help you decide which instrument is best for you. With a few minutes of guidance, you will be able to try any instrument you would like. The directors are trained professionals whose number one goal is to assign students to instruments that will promote their success. This appointment will help accomplish this.

When the student leaves this appointment, they will have narrowed the selection to down to two instruments. The Downing Directors will meet and discuss all selection appointments and assign instruments appropriately.

These appointments will take place in April.

Step 4: Finalize your instrument selection

This last step simply means setting up your instrument rental and/or band kit purchase. You will be notified of this final stage once all our incoming band students have tested for their instruments. Near the end of April, the students will receive a letter in the mail notifying them of their assigned instrument. We have a few dates in May when a local music store that will be on hand in to set up the instrument rentals.

More information will come towards the end of April.

Choosing Percussion:

Due to the large number of students requesting percussion, and because of the fast pace of the percussion class, students interested in percussion must meet with Mr. Wylie for a percussion interview. After all the interviews have been completed, a handful of students will be selected for the percussion class. Because of the competitive nature of this selection process, a commitment to the percussion class should not be taken lightly.

Students wishing to join percussion simply need to sign up for band on their course selection sheet. They also need to set-up a percussion interview in addition to the instrument selection appointment. (Two Appointments) Again, the percussion appointments will be available through the website after Spring Break.
